📖 Storytime Magic: Bringing Brown Bear to Life
There are a few children’s books that never get old — and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? will forever have a place on our bookshelf.
When my two older boys were little, this story wasn’t just a bedtime favorite… it turned into a whole week of hands-on learning, giggles, and kitchen-table messes.
We started by coloring all the animals from the book — the red bird, blue horse, green frog, and of course, the brown bear himself. Then, we cut them out, taped them onto popsicle sticks, and made our own story puppets.
The boys loved acting out the book as we read. It made storytime come alive in such a simple, sweet way.
💡 Mom Tip: Laminate your animal puppets or cover them with clear tape — they’ll last for multiple story sessions (and even car rides!).
🅱️ Letter B & Bear Week Adventures
Once we finished the story, we turned our week into a Letter B & Bear theme!
It was all about B is for Bear, and here’s what we did:
🐻 Build-a-Bear Craft – Cut out bear body parts and let your kids assemble their own teddy. Great for scissors practice and creative play!
☕ Coffee Grind Bear – Spread glue on a paper bear and sprinkle with coffee grounds for a fun, textured fur look.
🫘 Bean Bear Poster – Glue dry beans on a bear outline — a tactile, calming craft for little hands.
🖍️ Brown Crayon Science – Melt brown crayons on paper with a blow dryer and talk about how heat changes solids to liquids. Simple science that feels like magic!
✏️ Letter B Tracing Practice – We traced uppercase and lowercase letter B’s inside reusable dry erase sleeves (so we could wipe and do it again!). A simple way to practice writing while tying in our “B is for Bear” theme.
📁 Color Matching Bear Game – Using a file folder, we glued pictures of bears in different colors (red, blue, yellow, green) and had the boys match the colored bear cutouts to the correct one in the folder. It was a perfect mix of color recognition, fine motor skills, and independent play — and everything stored neatly right in the folder when we were done!
🍴 Fork Painting Bear – Dip a fork into brown paint and “stamp” it around in circles to make a furry bear face! Once dry, glue on construction paper ears, googly eyes, and a nose. It’s simple, sensory, and turns out adorably fluffy.
🧲 Magnet Letter Play – Practice building the “B” magnets on a sheet pan and naming other words that start with B.
🧸 Extra Fun for a Full “Bear Week”
If your kids are hooked on bears after this, here are a few more fun ways to extend the theme:
🧁 Bake Bear Paw Cookies – Press chocolate chips or M&Ms into cookie dough to look like paw prints.
🧺 Host a Teddy Bear Picnic – Pack lunch in the yard with your child’s favorite stuffed animals.
🎶 Sing “The Bear Went Over the Mountain” – Move, dance, and sing!
🌳 Go on a Nature “Bear Hunt” – Take a short walk, collect twigs and pinecones, and build a pretend bear cave.
🧡 Why I Love “Kitchen, Kids & Country Roads” Moments
What I love about these simple themed weeks is how much learning happens in everyday life — right at your kitchen table.
You don’t need fancy supplies or an elaborate plan. Just a little creativity, a few household items, and a willingness to get messy together.
It’s those country road kind of days — full of laughter, glue, and imagination — that make the best childhood memories.
Turn storytime into hands-on learning! 🐻 These are the supplies we used for our Brown Bear, Brown Bear activity week — easy, affordable, and full of creativity.
