Small-Town Saturdays: Soccer, Cub Scouts, and Family Fun This Fall”

There’s something about a small-town Saturday in fall that just fills you up. The smell of freshly cut grass, the sound of kids laughing from the soccer field, that mix of chill-in-the-air and sunshine that makes you reach for your favorite sweatshirt. 🍂

This weekend was one of those perfectly imperfect small-town days — full of grass stains, frog hunts, and a little impromptu Cub Scout community service.

Morning on the Soccer Field

By 10:00 a.m., our car looked like a traveling sideline — chairs, blankets, snacks, and a seven-year-old buzzing with energy, talking about his “game plan” like he was heading to the championship.

The morning started out chilly, hoodies zipped up tight, but by mid-game we were shedding layers. There’s something magical about watching kids play just for the joy of it — no scoreboards that matter, just smiles, muddy knees, and proud little hearts.

My son had his own personal cheering squad: my mom came to watch, along with my sister and her boyfriend. Between the cheering, waving mid-game just to make sure we saw him, and high-fives after every goal, it was the kind of morning that reminds you how fun childhood really is.

When his game wrapped up, we walked across the field to catch his older brother’s match. Naturally, there was a pond nearby — and naturally, my seven-year-old decided it was the perfect time to look for frogs. 🐸

You can probably guess how that went: his shoes filled with water, his socks were soaked, and he got dirtier playing in the pond than he did in his game.

Mom fail:: I forgot extra socks and a change of shoes.

And since we weren’t done yet — next stop, Cub Scout food drive — my poor guy had to spend the afternoon running house-to-house in soggy socks and soccer cleats. 😅

But sometimes, life is just like that — messy, wet, and completely unforgettable.

💛 Afternoon of Giving Back

After the game, we traded soccer jerseys for Cub Scout uniforms and jumped right into community giving. The two littles took off running with plastic food pantry bags in hand, full of excitement at first.

Before long, though, the energy started to fade — so we turned it into a game. I’d count out loud to ten, and they had to reach the next porch before I finished. Suddenly, they were sprinting again, laughing and racing from house to house, turning a good deed into an adventure.

His wet socks squished with every step, but it didn’t slow him down one bit. I couldn’t help but laugh — two littles running door to door with the biggest smiles on their faces.

Walking through town, the sound of their laughter mixed with the crunch of leaves underfoot. Some houses had pumpkins on the porch, others had fall wreaths that made me stop and smile. Of course, it wouldn’t be a real mom day without a “facepalm moment.” 🙈 Some of the houses weren’t exactly well-kept… and my daughter loudly says, “This house looks creepy!” — just as the man who lived there started walking toward her. 🤦‍♀️

At one stop, a kind older lady waved from her porch and called out, “Good luck with sales!” It was such a small thing, but it felt big — a sweet reminder that community isn’t built by grand gestures, but by simple acts of kindness and connection.

🌻 Balancing Busy and Meaningful

Days like this remind me that “busy” doesn’t have to mean “chaotic.” It can mean full — full of laughter, purpose, and the simple joy of being together.

Between the soccer games and the food drive, we didn’t have much downtime — but we didn’t need it. Sometimes the best kind of rest is found in moments that fill your heart instead of your calendar. 💛

After all the running around, we ended the day just the way I love best: around my mom’s table. She had made a big pot of chili, the house smelled amazing, and we all sat down to share food, laughter, and stories from the day.

There’s nothing quite like ending a busy Saturday surrounded by family — muddy shoes by the door, full bellies, and even fuller hearts.

Sometimes I worry we’re too busy — but days like this remind me that busy doesn’t mean disconnected. It can mean full — full of laughter, purpose, and the kind of memories that stick.
