Halloween Activities for Kids: Fun Crafts, Games, and Learning Ideas for October
Halloween Fun with the Kiddos: October Activities You’ll Love! 🎃👻
October is hands-down one of my favorite months with the kiddos! There’s just something magical about pumpkins, costumes, and Halloween-themed activities that keeps them engaged and creative. This year, we had a blast with a mix of crafts, sensory activities, and games that kept their little hands and minds busy. Here’s a peek at what we did—and ideas for you to try too!
1. Story + Flannel Board Fun
Used a flannel board and laminated five pumpkins for the classic story Five Pumpkins on a Fence.
Kids loved placing the pumpkins on the fence as we read the story together.
2. Pumpkin Art & Crafts
Pumpkin Masterpiece: Drew a giant pumpkin on orange construction paper, and the kids glued different colored shapes all over to make a fun patchwork pumpkin.
Fingerprint Pumpkins: Painted their thumbs orange and stamped pumpkins all over the paper. Once dry, they used green markers to trace pumpkin vines.
Pumpkin Faces: Cut out black shapes to make jack-o’-lantern faces, then matched them to laminated pumpkins.
Pumpkin Size Sorting: Had pumpkins of various sizes and practiced putting them in order from smallest to biggest, then reversed.
Pumpkin Lacing Sheets: Great for fine motor skills!
3. Halloween Sensory Fun
Salt Ghosts: Traced a ghost, applied glue inside, sprinkled salt on top, and watched it sparkle.
Skeleton Hands: Painted their hands and forearms white, pressed onto black paper, then glued q-tips on top to make bones.
Ghost Feet: Painted their feet white, pressed onto colored paper, then added eyes and a mouth.
4. Active Games & Balance Challenges
Pumpkin Balloon Balance: Kids held an orange balloon and tried to balance it on one foot while counting.
Broom Balance Line: Laid a broom on the floor and practiced walking along it like a balance beam.
5. Matching & Sorting Fun
Pumpkin Faces: Matched cut-out faces to laminated sheets.
Halloween Cards: Witches hats, Frankenstein, spiders, mummies, and ghosts—match them up!
Haunted House Mazes: Trace the ghost to the haunted house.
Color-by-Shape Pumpkins: Kids colored pumpkins based on shape guides.
Ghost Color Matching: Match colored circles to a ghost printout.
6. Hands-On Learning with Halloween Themes
Halloween Calendar: Each day, kids put up a number on our October calendar with a fun theme: ghosts, pumpkins, witches’ hats, bats, and candy corn.
Halloween Costume Book: Laminated book with different costumes. Kids flipped pages to match the costume they liked.
7. Fun with Bats
Folded black construction paper in half, traced their hands, cut, unfolded, and revealed a bat.
🎃 Tips for Moms & Caregivers:
Rotate activities to keep things fresh; one day can be art, another day sensory, and another day movement-based.
Laminate pieces like pumpkin faces or costume cards—they’ll last year after year!
Keep a mix of independent and guided activities—some kids love free play, some need structure.
Most importantly, have fun and don’t stress perfection—Halloween is about creativity, not mess-free crafts.
With just a little prep, you can have a whole month full of fun, learning, and Halloween excitement with your kiddos. Try mixing and matching these ideas for endless October fun!
