Hidden Gem Alert: Family Fun & Fall Adventures in Altoona, WI

🍁 Discovering Altoona, Wisconsin: Small-Town Charm, Family Adventures & Fall Fun

I always love to travel off the beaten path — exploring places most people have never even heard of. This time, our adventure took us to the charming little town of Altoona, Wisconsin — and wow, what a hidden gem it turned out to be! 💛

🍽️ Lunch with a View at Cowboy Jack’s

We kicked off our day with lunch at Cowboy Jack’s, a cozy restaurant nestled right along the riverwalk. The food? Delicious! My boys went with the taco wraps, my daughter stuck with her go-to cheeseburger and fries, and my husband tried the Santa Fe Cauliflower Bowl (dairy-free and so flavorful!). I went for the Bourbon Salmon, and it did not disappoint.

We sat on the heated outdoor patio, which made for the perfect spot on a crisp fall afternoon. The kids loved warming up by the fireside while watching the river flow beside us. Cowboy Jack’s has a relaxing, family-friendly vibe, and it’s the kind of place where you can unwind, enjoy your meal, and still feel part of the local scene.

🎃 Strolling River Prairie Park – “Scary Prairie” Style

After lunch, we took a walk along the river and through River Prairie Park, which was all dressed up for Halloween as “Scary Prairie.” The decorations, photo ops, and spooky details made it a must-stop for families visiting in October. It’s part of a month-long Halloween celebration, and honestly, it was such a fun surprise to stumble upon.

If you’re planning a visit, make sure to check the River Prairie events calendar — from the Ginormous Pumpkin Festival to the Fall Frenzy, there’s always something festive happening. The park itself is beautiful year-round, but during fall it’s absolutely breathtaking with the colors reflecting along the river. 🍂

🛍️ Our Surprise Stop at “The Shed”

Next, we decided to check out a place I had seen online called “The Shed.” I thought we were headed to a colorful mini-village made from storage boxes — but our GPS took us to a different The Shed entirely… and it turned out to be a massive antique treasure trove! (I should have probably typed in THE YARD instead of THE SHED. 🤣

We spent quite a while walking through aisles filled with vintage finds, holiday décor, and collectibles. My youngest son had his eyes on a BB gun, my daughter (of course) found another Barbie, I told them next time, but brought home a Halloween skeleton. 💀

It wasn’t the “mini village” we thought we were going to find, but it ended up being one of those happy little travel surprises that make the journey even better.
