Mauthe Lake
Mauthe Lake Wisconsin: The Ultimate Family Day Trip Guide
Nestled in the heart of Wisconsin's beautiful Kettle Moraine State Forest, Mauthe Lake is one of those hidden gems that somehow still feels like a secret. Surrounded by rolling glacial landscapes that were formed thousands of years ago, this little 70-acre lake offers sandy beaches, swimming, kayaking, boating, fishing, hiking trails, and some of the best old-fashioned family fun you'll find anywhere in the state. Whether you're looking for an active day outdoors or a relaxing afternoon by the water, there's something for everyone.
What I love most about Mauthe Lake is that it encourages families to slow down. There aren't flashing screens, long lines, or expensive attractions competing for attention. Instead, kids create their own fun. They build, explore, imagine, discover, and make memories they'll talk about long after summer ends.
The older boys headed out on the boat to explore the lake while the younger kids stayed close to shore.
One thing I appreciated right away was how family-friendly the beach area is. There's plenty of room for kids to spread out, build in the sand, and play without feeling crowded. The water near shore is shallow enough for younger children to enjoy, and there were families everywhere making the most of a beautiful Wisconsin summer day.
The littles quickly got to work collecting rocks along the shoreline. Before long, those rocks became inventory for their newest business venture.
Apparently, Mauthe Lake is home to some very valuable stones.
Every few minutes they'd come running over with another "rare gemstone" they wanted to sell us.
They negotiated prices, explained why each rock was special, and proudly displayed their collections like tiny entrepreneurs.
When business slowed down, they grabbed their nets and headed for the water's edge to chase minnows. The excitement of catching one—even if it only stayed in the net for a few seconds before swimming away—never got old.
Meanwhile, watching the older boys cruising around the lake from the beach felt like watching childhood in fast forward. One group still finding magic in pebbles and minnows, the other making memories on the open water.
What I love most about Mauthe Lake is how simple it is. There's no pressure to have a packed itinerary or expensive attractions to keep everyone entertained.
Nature does all the work.
Whether you want to spend the day swimming, launch a kayak, take the boat out, fish for bass and northern pike, hike through the surrounding Kettle Moraine forest, or simply relax with your toes in the sand while your kids invent games that only they understand, this place has a way of slowing life down.
If you're looking for a Wisconsin day trip that the whole family will love, add Mauthe Lake to your summer list.
Another thing worth mentioning for families: the facilities are fantastic. If you've ever traveled with kids, you know how important this can be. The bathrooms were clean, well-maintained, and conveniently located near the beach area.
For parents, that's a huge win.
Just be prepared—you may leave with sandy shoes, tired kids, and a collection of "priceless" rocks that somehow followed you home.
Sometimes the best adventures are in your back yard.
