Dr. Seuss Days at The Trout Museum of Art in Appleton
One of our favorite Wisconsin adventures took us to Appleton’s Trout Museum of Art, where the kids got to dive into a world of color, creativity, and playful mess. From stamping to painting, the day was filled with laughter, inspiration, and a few extra splashes of paint—mostly on my littlest one’s face! It was one of those visits that sticks in your memory long after the paint has dried.
A Little About the Trout Museum of Art
The Trout Museum of Art is more than just walls hung with beautiful works of art—it’s a community hub that celebrates creativity in all ages and forms. Founded from a local artists’ guild in the 1960s and renamed in 2010 after a generous endowment, the museum has grown into a place where art, learning, and connection meet through exhibitions, classes, and community events.
Whether you’re strolling through thoughtful exhibitions or taking part in interactive programming, the museum aims to inspire people of all ages to explore their creative sides.
Classes and Creative Activities for Kids (and Families!)
One of the things that makes the Trout Museum so special—especially for families doing homeschool or thematic educational units—is the variety of hands‑on art opportunities they offer:
🎨 Youth Workshops & Camps – Seasonal workshops designed for kids and teens help them explore different art mediums and build confidence through creative expression.
👩🎨 Professional Artist Instructors – Classes are taught by practicing artists who make learning techniques fun and engaging, whether your little one is a budding Picasso or a first‑time painter.
🌟 Free Community Programs – The museum also hosts no‑cost programming, including monthly art sessions, community art days, and special events for families.
🖼️ Special Family Days & Themed Activities – Throughout the year, the museum holds activities tied to current exhibits or seasonal themes. These events are designed to make art accessible and fun for families—like the Dr. Seuss–themed painting activity our kids loved.
Our Visit: Painting, Play, and Homeschool Magic
On the day we visited, the kids joined a Dr. Seuss–themed painting activity inspired by “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish”. They got to stamp and decorate their own red and blue fish, experimenting with colors, patterns, and shapes. It happened to be Dr. Seuss week, and we had already been exploring his books through a variety of activities at home, so this museum visit was the perfect way to tie everything together. True to toddler form, my littlest one ended up with more paint on his face than on the fish! Adorable little boys in their paint smacks and all—it was messy, colorful, and absolutely delightful.
By the time we left, the kids were glowing with pride over their fish—and I was reminded of how rare it is to find a place that sparks pure creativity for little ones and grown-ups alike. The Trout Museum of Art isn’t just a gallery—it’s a playground for imagination, a space where stories come to life, and where every brushstroke, stamp, and splash of paint invites you to see the world a little differently. Whether you’re looking for a family day out, a spark of inspiration, or just a reason to get messy and have fun, this museum is a hidden gem in Appleton that’s waiting for you to discover.
