The Scoreboard Didn't Matter…
His Heart Did ❤️⚽
Yesterday gave me one of those parenting moments I'll never forget.
My son's team was having an incredible game. They were up by quite a few goals, and the other team was struggling. On top of that, they didn't have enough substitutes.
So my 8-year-old did something that completely melted my heart.
He volunteered to play goalie for the opposing team.
I could see some of the parents wondering if he would actually help them or if he'd just stand there and let the goals roll in.
We smiled and said, "Oh, he'll help them."
And he did.
He absolutely rocked that goalie position. Honestly, it was the best I've ever seen him play goalie. He dove for balls, hustled after every shot, and worked as hard for the other team as he would have for his own.
After the game, I asked him about it.
His response?
"Well Mom, we were winning by so much that I felt bad for them. I wanted to work hard to block those goals and help them out."
Cue the tears.
In a world that celebrates winning, my little boy chose compassion.
He saw kids who were discouraged and wanted to make the game more fun for them. He didn't care about adding another win or another goal to the scoreboard. He cared about people.
You can teach kids to kick a ball, score a goal, or win a game.
But you can't force a heart like that.
Yesterday reminded me that while I'm proud of his athletic ability, I'm infinitely more proud of the person he's becoming.
If that doesn't tell you something about my 8-year-old's heart, I don't know what does.
A heart of gold. 💛
And that's a victory bigger than any soccer game could ever be. ⚽❤️
