Simple Learning Hacks for Kids — and the Bearded Dragon Who Saved Homework Time🐉
✨ Thursday Magic, Math Battles & a Bearded Dragon Named Shaggy 🐉
If you’ve been around here a while, you already know — Thursdays are my favorite day. 💛 There’s just something about knowing the weekend is close, the kids only have one more early morning to power through, and soccer Saturday is right around the corner that puts me in a good mood.
But last night? It wasn’t soccer that made me smile — it was homework night.
Our seven-year-old has been having a bit of a tough time focusing lately. He’s a smart cookie, but his brain is always going a hundred different directions. (If you’re a parent who’s ever watched their kid stare blankly at a math worksheet for fifteen minutes straight, you know exactly what I mean. 😅)
We’re not a medication kind of family — I prefer hands-on patience and creative motivation. So I told him, “If you can really focus tonight, you can have the bearded dragon.”
And that’s how Shaggy, our scaly little family sidekick, ended up perched on his arm while he powered through math problems. 🐉 You should’ve seen the look on his face — part concentration, part pure joy. Honestly, Shaggy might be the best math tutor we’ve ever had.
Meanwhile, my five-year-old was across the table working on her rhyming skills. (We’re deep in the “cat, hat, mat” stage of learning — which sounds simple until you try it with a wiggly kindergartener who’s over it after five minutes.)
So out came our secret weapon: the Time to Rhyme game. 🎲
Now, do we play by the rules? Absolutely not. 😂 She likes to pick the pictures herself, line them up however she wants, and when Mom’s board starts filling up too quickly, she suddenly decides it’s time to “switch.” But honestly — she’s laughing, she’s learning, and she doesn’t even realize she’s doing schoolwork. That’s a win in my book.
Between the math, the rhyming, and one very proud bearded dragon, it was one of those perfectly imperfect nights that remind me why I love this stage of life. It’s messy, it’s loud, it’s chaotic… but it’s ours. ❤️
5 Simple Learning Hacks That Actually Work for My 7-Year-Old
(Because sometimes, focusing on math requires a bearded dragon… and a little creativity.)
Bring in a “study buddy” 🦎
Whether it’s a pet, a favorite stuffed animal, or even a toy army of dinosaurs, letting your child “teach” their buddy what they just learned helps the lesson stick — and keeps their attention longer. (In our case, Shaggy the bearded dragon earned his tutoring badge last night!)Set a 10-minute focus timer ⏰
Kids with short attention spans do better in short bursts. Try 10 minutes of focus, 2 minutes of wiggle time, repeat. You’ll be amazed how much more they can accomplish without melting down.Make movement part of learning 🚶♂️
Tape math facts to the wall and let them “jump to the answer,” or do spelling words while bouncing a ball. Physical movement helps their brain process and retain information better — and it feels like play.Reward with experience, not stuff 🎉
Instead of candy or toys, offer a fun privilege like choosing the next family game, a later bedtime, or (in our case) hanging out with Shaggy. It keeps motivation strong without feeding the “what do I get?” cycle.End on a win 💪
Stop each session after a small success, even if it’s tiny. Ending with confidence builds positive associations with learning — and makes them way less likely to fight you next time.
We’re still figuring out what works best, but one thing I’ve learned is this — when learning feels fun and personal, everything clicks a little easier. Even if that means a bearded dragon’s sitting at the table with us.
Stick around — next week I might let the chickens help with spelling. 🐔😉
