๐ŸŒบ From Malasadas to Mountains: Our Family Day in South Oสปahu ๐Ÿฉโ›ฐ๏ธ๐Ÿ

๐ŸŒž Day 2: South Shore Adventures โ€“ Hawaii with Kids ๐ŸŒด๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

Weโ€™re still alive ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™Œ! Just a little jet-lagged ๐Ÿ˜ด and trying to recover from this wild time difference โฐ. Today we stuck around the south side of Oสปahu ๐Ÿ๏ธ, and wowโ€”what a day!

Between malasadas ๐Ÿฉ, mountain views โ›ฐ๏ธ, tide pools ๐ŸŒŠ, and history ๐Ÿ‘‘, my legs are tired ๐Ÿฅต but my heart is so full ๐Ÿ’–---- of food, fun, and hikes that reminded me I might still be out of shape (letโ€™s just blame it on my healed broken foot ๐Ÿ‘ฃ).

๐Ÿฉ Breakfast at Leonardโ€™s Bakery

First stopโ€”Leonardโ€™s Bakery! It's been a must stop since 1952---Famous for their โœจ malasadas โœจโ€”Portuguese-style doughnuts that are fluffy pillows of joy ๐Ÿคค. Sometimes theyโ€™re filled with custard ๐Ÿฎ or haupia (coconut cream ๐Ÿฅฅ). The line is usually an hour โณ (worth it!), but we got lucky ๐Ÿ€.

Even though some flavors were sold out ๐Ÿ˜ข, we grabbed a box ๐Ÿ“ฆ and sat on the step ๐Ÿ‘ฃ while Jaxson happily fed Brynlee ๐Ÿผ. Sweetest breakfast moment ๐Ÿ’•.

โœจ Try it at home: Simple Malasadas (Portuguese Donuts)

  • 2 ยผ tsp yeast, ยผ cup warm water, 1 cup sugar

  • 6 eggs, ยฝ cup butter, 1 cup milk, 6 cups flour

  • Mix โ†’ rise โ†’ shape โ†’ fry in hot oil until golden โ†’ roll in sugar.
    Best eaten warm ๐Ÿ˜‹.

โ›ฐ๏ธ Diamond Head Hike

Next upโ€”Diamond Head Crater. ๐ŸŒ‹ Honestly, pictures ๐Ÿ“ธ will never do it justiceโ€”itโ€™s breathtakingโ€”literally and figuratively ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜. The hike isnโ€™t super long (1.6 miles) but those stairs ๐Ÿชœ at the end nearly finished me off ๐Ÿ˜‚. The views from the summit were some of the most beautiful Iโ€™ve ever seen.

Rob = Dad of the Year. ๐Ÿฆธโ€”carrying Brynlee in the hiking carrier and even Jaxson half way, one kid in the front and one on his back! I tried switching with him butโ€ฆ letโ€™s just say he quickly had them both again. Major was a champ, powering through step after step.๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’ชโ€”such a trooper!

๐Ÿ“ฆ Fun Fact: Diamond Head

  • Hawaiian name: Lฤ“สปahi (โ€œbrow of the tunaโ€) ๐ŸŸ

  • Formed 300,000 years ago ๐ŸŒ‹

  • Old military lookout ๐Ÿช–

๐Ÿ’ก Kid Hiking Tip: Bring a hydration backpack ๐Ÿ’ง, snacks ๐ŸŽ, hats ๐Ÿงข, and sunscreen โ˜€๏ธ. Extra socks & comfy shoes are lifesavers! Make a game out of it. ("I'm going to beat you up the steps") It seemed to keep the little one running and laughing along the way.

โœจ Kid-hiking tips:

  • Hydration backpack ๐Ÿ’ง

  • Sunscreen ๐Ÿงด

  • Hats ๐Ÿงข๐Ÿ‘’

  • Snacks ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿฅจ

  • Little rewards ๐Ÿฌ

Totally worth it for the view ๐ŸŒ….

๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ  Makapuสปu Tide Pools & Snorkeling

After Diamond Head, we hit the Kaiwi Shoreline Trail to see the Makapuสปu Tide Pools. We hiked a bit before the boys tapped out on walking. ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚. Instead, we cooled off with swimming & snorkeling. The waves crashing ๐ŸŒŠ, lava rocks ๐Ÿชจ, and little pools ๐Ÿš were gorgeous.

Snorkeling = a MUST in Hawaii ๐Ÿคฟ. The kids spotted tropical fish ๐ŸŸ, hermit crabs ๐Ÿฆ€, starfish โญ, and even tiny urchins ๐Ÿฆ”. Every shell ๐Ÿš felt like buried treasure ๐Ÿ’Ž.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Fun Fact: Makapuสปu

  • โ€œMakapuสปuโ€ means โ€œbulging eyeโ€ ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ (named for a goddess with 8 bright eyes)

  • Tide pools are home to crabs ๐Ÿฆ€, starfish โญ, sea cucumbers ๐Ÿฅ’, and urchins ๐Ÿฆ‘

  • Nearby lighthouse is one of the most photographed spots on Oสปahu ๐Ÿ“ธ

๐Ÿ’ก Bring Along: Snorkels, reef-safe sunscreen (I can't STRESS this enough! Keep our reefs healthy and safe, please make sure if you are traveling to Hawaii to check the sunscreen) ๐ŸŒฑ, and water shoes to protect little feet from sharp lava rocks.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Halona Blowhole Lookout

On the way back, we stopped at the Halona Blowhole ๐ŸŒŠ. This natural wonder was formed thousands of years ago when molten lava tubes ๐ŸŒ‹cooled and hardened, leaving an underwater tunnel. Now, everytime the waves crash into it ๐ŸŒŠ, the ocean sprays upward through the rock like a massive fountain-โ›ฒ sometimes reaching 30 feet in athe air!! The kids squealed every time it sprayed ๐Ÿ˜‚. It's mesmerizing to watch and such an easy pull-over stop for families. ๐Ÿš—

๐Ÿ“ฆ Fun Fact: Halona Blowhole

  • โ€œHalonaโ€ = โ€œlookoutโ€

  • Seen in movies like From Here to Eternity ๐ŸŽฅ Down below the lookout is a hidden Gem known as Eternity Beach. Where this was filmed. We didn't make the hike down this time, the kiddos were starting to get hungry, but it's definitely worth checking out if you have the time (&energy.)

  • Hawaiian legend- Like many places in Hawaii, Halona has a story. Acording to ledgend, the blowhole is guarded by a moสปo (water spirit ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ’ง) Locals believed the Mo'o watched over the swimmers and could bring blessings---or mischief--depending on how they were treated. Standing there with the waves thundering below, you can almost imagine the spirit hiding in the tunnels, just breathing through the bursts of water. ๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿ’ก Safe & easy stop for kidsโ€”just watch from the lookout platform. The actual blowhole area is slippery & dangerous โš ๏ธ.

๐ŸŒฎ Lunch at South Shore Grill

By lunch, everyone was starving, so we hit South Shore Grill on Monsarrat. South Shore Grill-- Fresh fish ๐Ÿ , garlic shrimp ๐Ÿง„๐Ÿค, slaw ๐Ÿฅ—, mac salad ๐Ÿ, and rice ๐Ÿš = perfection ๐Ÿ‘Œ. I could eat here every. single. day. ๐ŸŒฎ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿคค

๐Ÿ“ฆ Fun Fact: South Shore Grill

  • Family-owned since 2004 ๐ŸŒบ

  • Famous for fish tacos & Mix Plate ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ—

  • Surfer vibe, friendly staff ๐Ÿ„โ€โ™€๏ธ

  • Taco Tuesday = great deals ๐ŸŒฎ

โœจ Try it at Home: Hawaiian-Style Fish Tacos

  • 1 lb white fish (mahi mahi, cod, or tilapia)

  • Season: lime juice, garlic, ๐Ÿง„ paprika, salt โ†’ pan fry until flaky

  • Serve in corn tortillas ๐ŸŒฝ

  • Top with shredded cabbage, pineapple salsa (pineapple + red onion + cilantro + lime), drizzle of sriracha mayo.

Kid hack: Keep one taco โ€œplainโ€ with cheese & mild sauce ๐Ÿง€๐Ÿ˜Š.

๐Ÿ‘‘ สปIolani Palace--Hawaiian Royalty & the Banyan Tree of Kings ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿฐ

After our hearty lunch ๐Ÿค๐Ÿš, we headed to สปIolani Palace, the only royal palace on U.S. soil ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‘‘. Inside it felt surrealโ€”walking the same halls where King Kalฤkaua and Queen Liliสปuokalani once held court ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿ’ซ. We marveled at the grand chandeliers โœจ, sparkling jewelry ๐Ÿ’Ž, royal thrones ๐Ÿ‘‘, elegant clothing ๐Ÿ‘—, the throne room ๐Ÿ‘‘, and suites where royal ceremonies ๐ŸŽ‰ and historical moments ๐Ÿ“œ unfolded- rich Hawaiian history ๐Ÿ“– The palace whispers stories of power, celebration, and royalty ๐Ÿ‘ธ๐Ÿคด. Outside = big lawns where the kids ran wild ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ while I soaked in the beauty ๐ŸŒธ.

Just across the street where we parked ๐Ÿš—, a majestic banyan tree ๐ŸŒณ stretched its limbs wide, shading the sidewalk ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒž. This isnโ€™t any ordinary tree, its a living testament to royal heritage and Hawaiiโ€™s global ties ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’–.

Standing beneath its leafy canopy ๐Ÿƒ, we felt connectedโ€”to the palace, the past, and the stories that shaped it ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ. A quiet reminder that every palace deserves a guardian tree ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’› to whisper its history.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Fun Fact: The Royal Banyan Tree ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ‘‘

  • Planted in the late 1800s ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธby Queen Kapiสปolani as a royal gift ๐ŸŽ

  • A banyan tree ๐ŸŒณโ€”one plant with sprawling roots, symbolizing legacy, endurance, and growth ๐ŸŒฑโœจ

๐Ÿ’ก Tip for visitors: Pause under the tree ๐ŸŒณ, snap a photo ๐Ÿ“ธ, and take a moment to imagine the centuries of stories it has witnessed โณ๐Ÿ’ซ.

๐ŸŒˆ Rainbow Drive-In: A Taste of Local Tradition ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŸ๐ŸŒด

After our visit to สปIolani Palace ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ›๏ธ, we headed to Rainbow Drive-In, a beloved Honolulu institution serving hearty, affordable plate lunches since 1961 ๐ŸŽ‰. Located on Kapahulu Avenue, just outside Waikฤซkฤซ ๐Ÿ–๏ธ, this spot is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Hawaiian comfort food ๐ŸŒบ

A Legacy of Flavor -๐ŸฅขFounded by Seiju and Ayako Ifuku, Rainbow Drive-In was created to provide delicious home-style meals to Hawaiสปiโ€™s working-class community ๐Ÿ’›. Seiju perfected his cooking while serving as a cook in WWII ๐Ÿณ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ, then brought those skills to this iconic drive-in ๐Ÿš—โœจ. The friendly service and satisfying meals quickly made it a local favorite ๐Ÿ„โ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŒบ.

Rainbow Drive-In is famous for its plate lunches ๐Ÿ›โ€”two scoops of rice ๐Ÿš, macaroni salad ๐Ÿฅ—, and a generous portion of your choice of meat ๐Ÿ–. Some standouts:

๐ŸŒบ Ending the Day: Full Hearts, Full Bellies ๐Ÿด

As the sun set ๐ŸŒ… and the sky turned shades of pink and gold ๐ŸŒธโœจ, we finally made our way back to our friendโ€™s home ๐Ÿก. The kids were tired but happy ๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ˜„, full of stories about fish ๐Ÿ , and the giant spray of Halona Blowhole ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’ฆ.

We shared some of the tator tots, visited with our amazing friend who made everything so easy โค๏ธ, and then headed to the dog park ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŽพ. Watching the kids run, laugh, and throw balls while the dogs chased them was the perfect end to a perfect day ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’ซ.

Today reminded me how magical Hawaiสปi is ๐ŸŒดโ€”from fluffy malasadas ๐Ÿฉ to breathtaking Diamond Head views โ›ฐ๏ธ, to historical สปIolani Palace ๐Ÿ‘‘ and the guardian banyan tree ๐ŸŒณ across the street, to fresh fish tacos ๐ŸŒฎ and hearty plate lunches ๐Ÿ”โ€”every moment is an adventure for the senses ๐ŸŒˆโœจ.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip for Families Traveling to Hawaii:

We went to bed tonight with full hearts โค๏ธ, tired legs ๐Ÿฆต, and the sweetest memories ๐ŸŒดโœจ. Hawaii, youโ€™ve captured usโ€”we canโ€™t wait for tomorrow ๐ŸŒž!
