Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison
🌟 “What’s better than a free zoo day with the kids? A free zoo day with amazing burgers to start it all off!”
That’s exactly how our perfect day in Madison began. We kicked things off with a visit to AJ Bombers for lunch — a fun, energetic burger joint with a cult following that once called Madison home. Originally born in Milwaukee in 2009, AJ Bombers was known for its quirky vibe, peanuts flying from overhead “bombs,” and creative burgers that even won national attention on the Travel Channel’s Food Wars. The Madison location closed years ago, and even the Milwaukee flagship sadly shut its doors in late 2025 after 16 memorable years in downtown Water Street, making way for future pop‑ups and ghost kitchen experiences.
But that’s just the beginning of our story.
Just a short drive from the city’s heart lies one of Wisconsin’s most treasured family attractions: Henry Vilas Zoo — one of the handful of free, community‑supported zoos in the entire country. Tucked into Vilas Park on 28 acres of green space, this beloved zoo has welcomed generations of visitors since its official opening in 1911 and stands as a living testament to Madison’s generous community spirit.
From the moment you step in, there’s a sense that this isn’t just any zoo — it’s a place where curiosity and wonder rule. Kids can wander through the Tropical Rainforest Aviary, marvel as playful otters splash around, stand in awe before lions and tigers, and wander from one delightful exhibit to the next without ever worrying about a ticket fee.
Because admission is always free (thanks to donations and community support), families can focus on what matters most — making memories together. Whether it’s spotting flamingos, watching the carousel spin, or catching the kids’ eyes light up at the giant polar bear exhibit, Henry Vilas has that perfect blend of adventure and accessibility.
Surrounded by Vilas Park’s lush open spaces, you might find yourself lingering to watch the kids run free on playgrounds, enjoy a picnic by the lagoon, or chat about the day’s favorite animal sightings.
✨ And that’s the magic of a Madison family day: you start with laughs over unforgettable burgers (even if that spot is now a sweet memory), follow it with wonder at a world‑class free zoo, and end with happy kids recounting their favorite creatures of the day.
What could be better than that? A perfectly simple, wildly fun, and unforgettable family adventure that didn’t break the bank — just warmed your hearts. 🌈🦁👨👩👧👦
