A Quick Stop in Tomah
You never quite know where our adventures will take us — and that’s half the fun!
This time, our family road trip led us through Tomah, Wisconsin, on our way to Eau Claire. What started as a simple overnight stay turned into one of those sweet, memory-making detours that remind me why we love traveling as a family.
🏨 Staying at the Best Western Tomah
We checked into the Best Western in Tomah, a cozy, family-friendly hotel that instantly felt like a comfortable home-away-from-home. After a few hours on the road, the kiddos were thirsty — and that’s when I spotted a welcoming little bar connected right to the hotel called Mr. P’s Bar & Grill.
🍹 Mr. P’s Bar & Grill — A Local Gem
Mr. P’s is one of those small-town spots that captures everything I love about Wisconsin hospitality. It’s relaxed, friendly, and full of locals swapping stories at the bar alongside travelers just passing through. Known for its nightly drink specials and easygoing atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to unwind after a day on the road.
The best part? It’s attached directly to the hotel, so I didn’t even have to step outside. I popped in, grabbed some drinks for everyone, and met the crew at the pool — a simple, happy little moment that set the tone for the rest of our stay.
💦 Family Fun at the Pool
The kids were beyond excited — swimsuits were on before we even unpacked! My husband made his way straight to the sauna (a well-deserved break, if you ask me), and our 12-year-old quickly claimed the hot tub. It was one of those evenings where everyone was laughing, splashing, and just enjoying being together.
The next morning came early — which worked out perfectly since the Best Western Tomah has some of the earliest pool hours I’ve ever seen! Before another round of swimming, we headed to breakfast.
🥞 Breakfast at Perkins — Bacon, Pancakes & Smiles
Right next door to the hotel is Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, and the Best Western provides guests with breakfast coupons as part of your stay. Such a clever partnership!
Breakfast was fantastic — crispy bacon, sprinkled pancakes, and happy, full kiddos ready for another splash in the pool. Sometimes it’s the simple things that make family travel so easy and enjoyable.
🧀 Humbird Cheese Mart — A True Wisconsin Treasure
After checkout, we decided to keep the adventure going. Just a few minutes down the road sits Humbird Cheese Mart, one of Wisconsin’s oldest and most charming cheese shops.
Founded in the 1930s, Humbird Cheese has been sharing Wisconsin’s dairy traditions for nearly a century. They work with over two dozen local cheese factories, offering everything from sharp aged cheddars and squeaky fresh curds to creamy spreads and specialty flavors you won’t find anywhere else.
The shop is packed wall to wall with local cheese, snacks, and fun finds — the kind of place where you can feel the history in every bite. The kids picked out their favorite snack cheeses, my husband found some jalapeño pickled eggs (of course!), and I stocked up on local goodies to take home.
It’s not just a shop — it’s a slice of Wisconsin history.
This stop was a perfect reminder that sometimes, the best parts of a road trip aren’t the big attractions, but the small-town gems you stumble upon along the way.
🚗 Why Tomah, Wisconsin Is Worth the Stop
Between the cozy comfort of the Best Western, the friendly charm of Mr. P’s, the delicious breakfast at Perkins, and the local flavor of Humbird Cheese Mart, Tomah turned out to be a family favorite stop along our drive.
While my older boys are hitting that “too cool for adventure” stage (and I miss their adventurous sides), even they couldn’t help but smile on this little getaway.
Because around here, every stop is a story — and this one was worth every mile.
